Fine Arts
Students learn a variety of techniques, explore different media and become familiar with fundamental terms and concepts such as proportion and composition.
Our curriculum is designed to integrate with each classroom's social studies/history curriculum, so students have an opportunity to understand the interrelationship among culture, history and artistic expression.
Our art room is truly a creative learning environment for students, enabling them to explore materials with the best tools they have: their hands. As teachers, we facilitate this exploration and are always inspired by how this process unfolds as students discover their innate creativity.
Outreach Projects
The Fine Arts Department has teamed with area schools and hospitals for several community outreach projects. Developing opportunities for students to experience the value of their creativity and self-expression outside the classroom-empowering them to know that they can build friendships and have a positive impact on their community-is an important component of the mission of the Fine Arts Department.
For the NGS/Westview Elementary School/Krannert Center for the Performing Arts project, students teamed up to explore themes of multiculturalism and diversity through an African art-making project. 
The project promoted a sense of community, understanding and cultural sensitivity among students from diverse backgrounds. See the article published in the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette.
The Fine Arts Department partnered with the Mills Breast Cancer Institute and Christie Clinic to provide student-made art encouragement cards to patients undergoing chemotherapy.
We were also honored to help create a temporary exhibit of student artwork for the Carle Foundation Hospital's Pediatric Floor's Family Waiting and Activity Area. Currently, eight colorful and uplifting landscape scenes and flower drawings created by students are on display for the children and their visitors to enjoy.
