In 2010, the Middle School launched a community service learning initiative in collaboration with the East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center. The Refugee Center (ECIRMAC) has been operating in the C-U community since 1982. Its purpose is to aid in the resettlement of refugees and immigrants in the East-Central Illinois area, and to aid in the exchange and preservation of their respective cultures.
Thus far, students have organized a clothing drive for the newborn daughter of a Congolese refugee, collected diapers, books and other necessities for young children, and organized a very successful coat drive. NGS Middle School students are involved in each aspect of these initiatives - organizing, planning, advertising, collecting, sorting, and delivering! They selflessly and enthusiastically give their time to make sure each event is a success.
